Komen Racing For a Breast Cancer Cure Turns downtown St. Louis Pink
Nearly 70 thousand people for annual walk in St. Louis, More than $2,371,633.09 was raised

        Some of the nearly 64,000 people walk up Olive Street during the annual Susan G. Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure in St. Louis on June 11, 2011. More than $2.3 million was raised with seventy-five percent of the money staying in St. Louis to fund screening, treatment, education and support programs. St. Louis has been tapped as the largest Koman Race in the United States.

        More than 1,000 teams registered prior to race day, including OCA (Organization of Chinese Americans), YAPA (Young Asian-American Professional Association), & MAABA (Missouri Asian American Bar Association) from St. Louis Asian community.

        More than $2,371,633.09 was raised. Seventy-five percent of the money raised stays in St. Louis to fund screening, treatment, education and support programs. The remaining 25 percent goes to the national Susan G. Komen for the Cure Grants Program.

        Davis and Jane Payne and Cam Janssen of the St. Louis Blues served as honorary co-chairs of the 13th annual Susan G. Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure.

        Forty-nine hundred survivors took part in the survivor procession before the Race for the Cure. After they marched, 'American Idol' contestant Tim Halperin sang his song "We Fight Back." Halperin said he wrote the song because someone he knew in college was diagnosed with breast cancer. Halperin has been traveling around the country singing the song at Komen events.

        With survivors and activists in more than 120 cities and communities across the globe and more than 100 Komen Race for the Cure events in the United States and internationally, Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the most progressive grassroots organization fighting breast cancer today and the St. Louis Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure became part of that network in 1999.

        The Susan G. Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure hit the ground running that same year and the first St. Louis Race immediately earned the distinction of being the largest road race ever held in the city. The 10,257 St. Louis Race participants set and still hold a Komen record as the largest first-year event of any Race around the globe. Today, the Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure has had more than 60,000 participants the last five years and is one of the top three largest 5K Races in the world!

        The Komen St. Louis Affiliate is working to better the lives of those facing breast cancer in the local community and addresses the needs of our community by funding breast health programs in our 17-county service area. To date, the Affiliate has raised more than $19 million through various fundraising events like the Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure and Dine Out for the Cure. More than $13 million has stayed in St. Louis to fund screening, treatment, education and research programs with $6 million going to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Grants Program to fund research.
