St. Louis (KSDK) - A multi-million dollar development is underway in downtown St. Louis. The goal is for it to be St. Louis' next must-see destination.
The Mercantile Exchange development is located on Washington Avenue, in between 6th and 7th streets. Developers are calling it the Times Square of St. Louis.
"We want to be able to attract families, couples, and singles," said Spinnaker Development's Amos Harris. "The idea is that we have all these different levels of attractions to get people inside the Mercantile Exchange."
In addition to a movie theater, Pi Pizza, Robust Wine Bar, an Embassy Suites hotel, apartment building and the National Blues Museum have all signed on board. The idea is creating a lot of buzz.
"I'm very very excited," said Amy Schroeder, who works downtown. "I heard the movie theater is going to be like a Moolah movie theater and not just a regular one, so that will add a lot of character to downtown."
That's not all it will add.
"We believe it will create at least 200 jobs in the immediate term and it will grow from there," said Mayor Francis Slay. "The whole idea is to create a critical mass that will bring people to downtown have a lot of things to do in the area."
"As a tourist, it's just nice to have nice places to eat and things to do," said Salt Lake City resident Lamar Helm. "It enhances the feeling of being downtown."
The Mercantile Exchange is scheduled to open next summer. |
