How We Met
Joining the modern-day trend of meeting online, we exchanged emails for a couple of weeks while Michael was in New Jersey for a family reunion. Our first date was over sushi in a central location at Westport Plaza. With a growing interest about each other, we decided to extend our date into a casual evening at Barcelona’s in Clayton.
The Proposal
After a little over a year together, Michael decided to pop the question the day before I ran the 10/10/10 Chicago Marathon. His calibrated efforts paid off after distracting me with an itinerary to go shopping nearby including at a jewelry store where the Sales Rep was also in on the plot. While walking from store to store, Michael casually asked if it would be okay to have my parents? approval for marriage. Initially, I thought that took the element of surprise out of a proposal. In the meantime, I had no idea that the Guest Services Manager was working quickly to set up our hotel suite. When we arrived back, a bucket of champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries lured us to the coffee table. It then became apparent that a bouquet of flowers and an overwhelming display of rose petals scattered in the shape of a circle covered the floor. He held my hand and told me that he had already spoken with my parents the week prior to the trip, and he and his sister had already went shopping for my ring back home in St. Louis. He then knelt down onto his knee, took the ring out of his left pocket, and proposed. It did not take very long for me to say yes. That evening, we decided to take a short cab ride to celebrate our engagement at an Italian restaurant called Trattoria No. 10 which was recommended by one of his three sisters. And as an engagement gift, he treated me to an all day spa at The Peninsula in downtown Chicago to relax my sore muscles after the race. Needless to say, what a weekend!
