Congressional Resolutions were introduced in the House and the Senate with bipartisan support at the end of May. The resolutions express regret for a series of laws Congress passed, that excluded persons of Chinese descent from immigrating to the U.S. and denied them U.S. citizenship. In 1943, Congress repealed these discriminatory laws, but there has never been any acknowledgment of the pain and suffering associated with the laws. This part of our history should no longer be ignored. It is important to recognize the many contributions Chinese, Asian, and other immigrants have made to the U.S., and for Congress to reaffirm its commitment to protecting the civil rights of all people, regardless of race or ethnicity. We need Congress to pass the resolutions now, before the last generation of individuals who suffered under the laws leaves us.

* TELL YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY. Call, text, email, tweet, or like the 1882 Project on Facebook. Tell your friends and family to contact their Members of Congress, too.
