Just hours after landing in Missouri, following a week abroad in China Gov. Jay Nixon made his way to Joplin to laud solid steps to rebuild the city recovering from a tornado this summer.
"People were asking about you," Nixon said, speaking to a Joplin construction worker about his trip.
Nixon's trip focused heavily on economic issues, highlighted by closing $4.6 billion in trade agreements with Chinese entities to encourage agricultural and commodities trade.
"When you can go and sell $4.6 billion worth of Missouri made goods and products and agricultural produce and commodities, that is a solid, solid trip for us that will have a return for the taxpayers for many years to come," Nixon told reporters in Joplin.
Nixon left for China following an unsuccessful special legislative session he called this summer, and emergence of news of a failed incentive agreement with a Chinese company last year.
But did that haunt his trip?
"No," he said. "None of the legislative session, or any other stuff back here, were significant parts of the discussion. This is a trip we'd been working on for a long time to make sure we were selling our commodities and our goods world wide."
In addition to economic agreements, Nixon said he discussed ways to ease student transfers between the two countries.
But after nine days abroad, Nixon said, unprovoked, "I'm glad to be back in America."
