Italians have the Hill. Hispanics can lay claim to sections of Cherokee Street. South Grand boasts a wealth of Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and Thai restaurants and stores, and the western part of Olive Boulevard in University City has its own Asian district.
Slowly, over the course of almost two decades, a new ethnic strip has formed on Manchester Road in west St. Louis County, centered approximately at Manchester and Highway 141. An ever-growing selection of restaurants, carry-out counters, groceries and boutiques caters to a growing local population of Indian, Pakistani and other south Asian immigrants and their offspring. The word "desi" is commonly used to describe this often-blended community and its activities.
Two religious and cultural focal points - the Gandhi Center and Hindu Temple, dedicated in 1992, and the Daar-ul-Islam mosque, opened in 1995 - are within a mile of each other on Weidman Road, just north of Manchester.
