MetroLink to begin $1.2 million project at UMSL stop

Construction on a new interlocking section, or rail crossover, is set to begin Monday at the University of Missouri-St. Louis South MetroLink Station.
The $1.2 million project will be funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Interlocking sections allow trains to switch tracks, to bypass a stalled train or move around construction projects. By building the interlocking sections closer together, Metro said it will be able to keep trains running on time even in the midst of delays.
Dianne Williams, director of communications for Metro, said the project will be split up into four phases. R.V. Wagner Inc. will be the general contractor for the first phase.
During construction, Williams said, there could be occasional single tracking and the chance passengers would be ferried via bus around the UMSL station. The south section of the Park-Ride lot will be closed for the duration of the project.
Metro expects the project to be completed in early 2013.
