Scott Air Force base to eliminate jobs as part of nationwide restructuring
A few hundred workers at Scott Air Force base will lose their jobs as part of a massive nationwide restructuring by the U.S. Air Force.
Scott AFB has identified 321 Air Force civilian permanent positions that will be eliminated to meet new budgetary guidelines set forth by the Secretary of Defense. No new positions will be added to Air Force missions, however, several non-Air Force organizations on base will not be affected by the measures.
In response to direction from the Secretary of Defense for DoD to stop civilian growth above fiscal year 2010 levels and the need to add 5,900 positions against the Air Force's top priorities, the Air Force has eliminated approximately 9,000 positions nationwide.
The actions are designed to accommodate the reduced growth in the civilian workforce by allowing the Air Force to consider where new positions will best support future missions and where current tasks need to be eliminated or reduced.
Of those 321 positions identified at Scott AFB, 122 are ones that were vacant due to previous hiring controls and 49 positions are identified for employees who will voluntarily retire or separate from federal service by December 31st as a result of early retirement incentives.

40 people will be transferred
The Air Force still needs to identify another 4,500 positions to eliminate in early 2012. At this time, it is not clear if any additional jobs will be eliminated at Scott AFB.
