St. Louis has 7 of nation's biggest private companies

Seven St. Louis area companies are among the nation's largest privately owned businesses, according to an updated list from Forbes magazine.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car was the highest ranking company from St. Louis. Its $14 billion in revenue makes it the 15th-biggest private company in the US.

All eight St. Louis firms were also on Forbes' list last year. All except McCarthy Holdings moved up in the rankings this year. Forbes says revenue at McCarthy, a construction firm, fell 21 percent.

        Here's the St. Louis portion of this year's list, with 2010 rank in parentheses:* 15. Enterprise Rent-A-Car (17)* 69. Graybar Electric (70)* 81. Apex Oil (101)* 83. Edward Jones (102)* 140. World Wide Technology (201)* 165. Schnuck Markets (174)* 178. McCarthy Holdings (123)

In all, Forbes finds 212 private companies with at least $2 billion in annual revenue.
