Danforth forms coalition with other plant science centers

The Donald Danforth Plant Science Center has joined forces with the nation's three other largest nonprofit plant science research institutions to form the Association of Independent Plant Research Institutes.

The other partners are the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., The Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, D.C., and The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation in Ardmore, Okla.

Collectively, AIPI member institutions operate nearly 60 laboratories with more than 400 personnel.

AIPI scientists will coordinate projects that study plant growth, development and chemistry; plant interactions with insects, fungi and bacteria; and metabolic processes, such as oil production and photosynthesis.

"Plants are some of the most highly complex organisms on the planet," said Jan Jaworksi, a member of the Danforth Plant Science Center. "AIPI researchers are dividing up the research into primary areas so that we can generate the most profound and useful discoveries."

The Danforth Center had $20 million in revenue in 2010.
