Windows installed at Lambert St. Louis - International Airport

Nearly all of the windows on the east side of the main terminal at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport are missing after a storm, packing high winds damaged most of the terminal area in St. Louis on April 22, 2011
St. Louis (KSDK) - A new, high-tech laminated glass window has been installed on the front side of Terminal 1 at Lambert St. Louis - International Airport.

The glass replaces the plywood that had been in place since an EF 4 tornado tore through the airport April 22.

The glass replacement will be complete on the final section the week of December 19.

"There's nothing better than seeing the sun shine through in all four domes of the terminal again," said Airport Director Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge. "We know it's taken awhile to reach this milestone, but given the extent of the damage and the unique challenges of manufacturing and installing a new generation of windows into this historic facility, we're pleased with the results."

Hilboldt Curtainwall, Inc. was selected as the contractor for the $900,000 project. More than 300 panes of glass totaling more than 15,000 square feet were replaced within the original floor-to-ceiling window framing.

The new windows contain half-inch Low-E coated laminated glass that features St. Louis-based Solutia's Saflex Interlayer, which reduces breakage and limits shattered glass damage that can result from severe storms.

Once all of the windows are in place, crews will spend several weeks finishing trim work and sealing the installation.
