Centene Corp. was the only St. Louis-based company to make CNN Money's Top 10 list of Fortune 500 companies for 2011, based on stock closing prices Dec. 9. The company continued its winning ways by hitting a new 52-week high this week.
Centene (NYSE: CNC), which ranks No. 493 on the Fortune 500, ranked No. 10 on this year's performers' list. Shares of Centene have risen 48 percent year-to-date and closed today at $39.85, up from $26.07 a year ago.
The company, led by Chairman and CEO Michael Neidorff, posted a profit of $29 million in the third quarter, up 28 percent from a year earlier, due to an increased number of members and expansion into Florida, Illinois, Mississippi and Texas.
Centene, which provides managed care programs and related services to individuals under Medicaid, has more than 1.6 million members. This number could increase substantially in coming years as health reform will likely expand Medicaid eligibility.
