llinois earns $43 million Race to the Top Grant

        The U.S. Department of Education awarded Illinois a $42.8 million federal grant from the Race to the Top program, Gov. Pat Quinn announced today.

        The grant is to help improve science technology, engineering and math education across Illinois.

        Half of the $43 million will be distributed to Illinois school districts that agree to accelerate education reform. The rest of the funds will be used to support the ongoing development of a data system that supports personalized learning and access to additional resources, professional development, realignment of curriculum and development of student assessments.

        Six other states received Race to the Top funds: Arizona, Colorado, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The grants awarded total $200 million and will be distributed through the 2013-2014 school year.
