Lambert ranked among safest US airports

Travel + Leisure magazine ranked Lambert-St. Louis International Airport as the nation's 13th safest airport.

The magazine examined data from 35 of the busiest commercial airports, looking at the number and severity of runway incidents from 2006 to 2010, based on data from the Federal Aviation Administration . The 15 airports on the list had zero life-threatening incidents during the five year span. The overall accident rate for all airports in 2010 was 0.61, or one in every 1.6 million flights, according to the Air Transport Association.

According to the analysis, Lambert had only 17 runway incidents between 2006 and 2010.

Travel + Leisure recognized Lambert for receiving an FAA air transport safety award in 2005 when it implemented a new taxiway designation system. It also mentions Lambert's beginnings in the 1890s as a launching pad for hot-air balloons.

Lambert recently completed renovations to Concourse A as part of the $70 million Airport Experience improvement program, which began in 2008.

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport topped the Travel + Leisure list with only four incidents in five years.
