ST. LOUIS - Bus ridership is on the rise in St. Louis.
Metro, the agency that provides public transit in the St. Louis area, cites a recent report from the American Public Transportation Association showing that St. Louis bus ridership grew 10 percent last year. Only Columbus, Ohio, with a 10.1-percent ridership increase, was higher.
The report says public transit nationwide experienced the second highest growth since 1957.
Ridership on the St. Louis region's light rail system, MetroLink, was up 2.4 percent in 2011, well below the national light rail average of 4.9 percent. But Metro officials say MetroLink use was up 8.3 percent in January of this year.
