Exports to China climb in Mo., Ill.

Missouri exports to China climbed 18 percent last year to $1.2 billion, with much of the growth coming from sales of waste and scrap metal.
That's according to a new report out today from the U.S. China Business Council, which tallied China-bound exports from all 50 states.
Illinois saw even stronger growth, with exports up 22 percent to $3.9 billion. Nationwide, China-bound exports are up 12 percent to $103.9 billion.
While crop production and computers and electronics are the biggest categories for export nationwide, waste and scrap metal took that title in Missouri. More than one-third of Missouri's exports fell into that category, which grew by $126 million in 2011.
Illinois sent a lot of scrap to China, too - $670 million worth - though its biggest export category was machinery, at $813 million.
China is now the U.S.' third-biggest export market, after Canada and Mexico. St. Louis-area officials and companies have worked aggressively in recent years to boost trade ties, including a now-stalled bid to bring Chinese air cargo flights to Lambert-St. Louis International Airport. |
