| The southeast side of the city is probably the most diverse area in the St. Louis region. Along with a good mix of Caucasians, African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians, Indians and Africans, South St. Louis city and county have the greatest number of Bosnians outside the country of Bosnia with an estimated 50,000-70,000 Bosnian immigrants that call the southside of St. Louis home. Most of the Bosnians are concentrated in the Bevo Mill area of Dutchtown. |

April 1, 2012 marks twenty years since the start of the Bosnian War, the most horrific conflict on European soil since World War II.
When Bosnia Herzogovina declared independence in March 1992, Bosnian Serbs, Orthodox Christians wanted their own state and fought for it. Bosnia's Muslim population was the main target of attacks. Thousands of women and children were raped and thousands of men and boys were killed. The war ended nearly three years later, December 1995. By the time it was over, two million people were displaced and at least one hundred thousand were killed.
Thousands of Bosnians fled their war torn country, many settled in St. Louis. More than seventy thousand Bosnians call St. Louis home. It is the largest Bosnian population outside the country of Bosnia.
