Julie Furst-Bowe will become Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's eighth chancellor in July.
Furst-Bowe, 48, was formally introduced to the SIUE community April 26 morning during a press conference on campus. She is currently the provost and vice chancellor for academic and student affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie and has held the post since 2005.
"She was just a great fit with the campus. She had a real feel for what we we do and where we are going," said John Navin, chairman of the university's search advisory committee and a professor in the SIUE School of Business.
Officials said Furst-Bowe was one of nine candidates considered. Four were brought to campus for the final round of interviews with 20 constitutent groups. She will succeed Vaughn Vandegrift, who is retiring after eight years in the position.
Administrators said Furst-Bowe's substantial background in quality improvement initiatives in higher education, and her success at implementing those principles at University of Wisconsin-Stout will serve the SIUE mission well. She has traveled internationally to speak on the subject and written a book and articles on improving quality in universities. She has also served as a senior examiner for the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award Program.
"I was so impressed by the dedication of the facilities and by the energy of the students," she told a crowd of about 250 in a ballroom in the campus student center. "Edwardsville looks like it's going to be a wonderful place to live and work."
She was given a standing ovation at the close of the press conference.
Afterwards, she said she had known of SIUE through her former Rita Hartung Cheng, the current chancellor of the Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
Furst-Bowe has been at the University of Wisconsin-Stout since 1990 where she served in a variety of administrative roles. She has degrees from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and the Stout and Eau Claire campuses of the University of Wisconsin. She is a native of Chippewa Falls, Wis.
