May 11, 2012 (St. Louis, MO) - Last Friday at 7pm, the International Institute of St. Louis (3654 S. Grand Blvd.) celebrated the resettlement of its 20,000th refugee with a reception for the St. Louis Community.

Richard Tao, the newly elected Chair of the Board of the International Institute, led the activities with a reflection on the agency's 30 year history of refugee resettlement and its impact on St. Louis. Anna Crosslin, also addressed the crowd and presented the International Institute Award to Gedlu Metaferia.

Metaferia was recognized for his many years of service to African refugees in the region. An Ethiopian refugee, Metaferia served as director of ERMAAM (Ethiopian Refugee Mutual Assistance Association of Missouri) in 1983, which came to be known today as AMAAM (African Mutual Assistance Association of Missouri.) He has announced his retirement from AMAAM in June of this year. He was greatly successful in rallying efforts around supporting all African refugees in the St. Louis community for more than 20 years.

"Over the years, Gedlu's work has been integral to the successful resettlement of thousands of African refugees in St. Louis," said Anna Crosslin, International Institute President & CEO. "He has serves as the safety net for those harder-to-serve refugees who may need many years in which to eventually successfully resettle."
