New International Boarding Program Benefits Both Visiting and Resident Students

The Fulton School at St. Albans, an independent, nonprofit school just outside of Wildwood, offers a new, comprehensive international boarding program for 7th to 12th grade students. This type of boarding program gives international middle and high school students a competitive advantage when considering higher education in the United States.
"We have always been a relatively international school," explained Kara Douglass, the head of school at The Fulton School. "Montessori draws an international crowd and our diverse faculty tends to draw from their home countries."
"Our program is really good for international students--and really unique compared to other, larger programs," said Douglass. "Our student community embraces international students, pulling them into activities, discussions, and social events. Rather than remaining on the social margins to hang out with each other, our international students are immersed in a nurturing group of kids who are excited to get to know them."
The Fulton School offers international students a comprehensive learning experience with intensive "English as a Second Language" (ESL) instruction, full academic curriculum, housing (in-home stays and off-campus boarding options), plus a complete cultural immersion experience.
Fulton's academic program combines learning English with a rigorous academic curriculum. The international students will become fluent in English during their middle and high school years, but they are exposed to and taught at the same academic level as their domestic peers.
"We have grown to value the diversity of opinion and tradition and perspective that our international students bring to the table," explained Douglass. "We want to expand our opportunities to develop our students' global awareness through international experiences, because we see them engaging in their language studies, their history/cultural studies, and their personal maturity through these international relationships."
The Fulton School at St. Albans' international program accepts students from middle to high school through senior year (7th grade through 12th grade). Admission is granted based on academic strength, financial stability, and a satisfactory level of proficiency in English.
Starting an ESL program prior to the college years gives students a competitive advantage when considering higher education in the United States. By introducing English alongside a demanding academic curriculum at an earlier age, international students tend to be successful and happier in an American higher education environment. Fulton graduates have been accepted at some of the nation's top universities, including Stanford, Notre Dame, and Brown.
Because international students have the opportunity of in-home stays, they benefit from full, 24-hour-a-day American cultural immersion. Students will absorb the typical American lifestyle, whether it's through English conversation, at-home family time, American cuisine, or trips to local sites such as the famed St. Louis Zoo and Arch.
"It was incredibly easy for me to integrate myself into this tremendous community at the Fulton School," explained Christopher Lutz, an international student from Bonn, Germany. "I felt accepted and respected right away. People were introduced to me nicely, and sports and various other activities simplified the new situation of learning a new language and meeting new people."
Plus, with the school's athletic program, all students have the opportunity to participate in soccer, basketball, track, tennis and golf (on one of the top golf courses in the state of Missouri).
Located just outside of Wildwood, The Fulton School at St. Albans is a small, independent school preparing students for higher education and a lifetime of learning.
