The financial sector generated 18 percent of the gross metropolitan product (GMP) in St. Louis in 2010, ranking it 115th out of 351 metro areas in the percentage of its GMP generated by that sector.

In fact, $22.9 billion of the metro area's $129.7 billion GMP in 2010 came from financial activities, according to an On Numbers analysis of the GMP of 351 markets, using the latest data available from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. GMP is the total output of goods and services in a given area.

Des Moines, Iowa, ranked No. 1 by percentage. Its financial sector generated 47 percent of its GMP, the highest percentage in the country. Only two other markets were above 40 percent: Sioux Falls, S.D., at 44.2 percent, and Bridgeport-Stamford, Conn., at 40.3 percent.

Collective figures for all 351 markets show the financial sector generating $2.84 trillion of their total GMP of $12.64 trillion. That's 22.5 percent.
