Arch Grants winners get city hall welcome

A few weeks after moving into their new home at the T-Rex incubator, the winners of the first round of Arch Grants funds got a welcome Monday at city hall by Mayor Francis Slay and Rodney Crim, the executive director of the St. Louis Development Corp.
Slay told the leaders of the startup companies, 15 of which where selected by Arch Grants from among 420 applicants, that the city is behind them and will do anything it can to help them succeed.
The event featured presentations by three of the Arch Grants winners.
Ron Meyer, an electrician by trade and the founder of Unique Metal Solutions, invented the patented Rocket Rack, a electrical support system used in food and beverage process plants. He said companies like his can help St. Louis recover some of the manufacturing jobs that have been lost in the past few decades.
"I'd like to have our manufacturing facility here in St. Louis and get some of those jobs back," Meyer said.
John Chen, a 2008 Washington University graduate who returned to St. Louis from Minneapolis recently, has already hired 20 employees for Med Preps, the company he co-founded to help prepare medical professionals for certification exams.
Chen said Med Preps' new employees are working on content creation, and the company is launching a mobile application to help students study on the go.
The event concluded with a slick video produced by Cool Fire Media documenting the creation of Arch Grants and the 29 finalists who came to town for a weekend to pitch their business ideas.
The video is the first episode of four in a series that will be posted on the Arch Grants website each Monday for the next month, Arch Grants executive director Sarah Spear said.
