New Movie Theater, Apartments, Shopping Coming to Downtown

ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - While you were sleeping, some big-time construction work was going on in Downtown St. Louis. When it's done, a new movie theater and much more will be ready for you to enjoy.
It's at the heart of the new Mercantile Exchange District. Early Tuesday morning, crews finished moving in massive pieces of steel into a building for part of the development. Crews moved in two 20-foot steel columns along with 2000 square feet of steel decking and 16 massive steel beams.
All of that is going to be used for a new movie theater that is being built inside what used to be St. Louis Centre, the old downtown mall. It will be downtown's only movie theater. But there is more to this new district than just the theater.
There are about two dozen retail businesses planned on the street level here including several restaurants. More than 200 apartments are already up and running. About 60 percent are rented.
An Embassy Suites is open as well as an office park. Developers are envisioning a real centerpiece for downtown when it's all done.
There are also plans for a national blues music museum. That is being built in the old Dillards building across the street from where the movie theater is being put up. It should be open in a few years. The movie theater will be complete later this year.
