Missouri Lottery ups proceeds to education by 8 percent

Missouri Lottery proceeds to public education reached $280 million in fiscal year 2012, up 8 percent from $259.4 million in fiscal year 2011.
May Scheve Reardon, executive director of the Missouri Lottery, said the increase this year was caused by efficient operations, increased advertising and a gain in partnerships and affiliations with sports teams.
Large winnings also drove ticket sales, the Missouri Lottery said, which included a world record $656 million Mega Millions jackpot prize in March.
One hundred percent of the proceeds from Missouri Lottery ticket sales go to public education. The funds represent about 4 percent of the annual funding required for Missouri's public education system.
Approximately 63 percent of each dollar spent on the lottery is returned to players as prizes, 26 percent to the state's public education programs, 6 percent pays for retailer' commissions and 5 cents pays for administrative costs.
