Union Pacific Railroad officials said they are investing nearly $25 million in the rail line that runs between Fults, Ill., and near Chester, Ill.

The project has begun and is scheduled to be complete by mid-October. This work is in addition to the project Union Pacific is doing in this year on the Illinois Department of Transportation's High Speed Rail corridor between Chicago and St. Louis.

The 34-mile project from Fults, in Monroe County, to Chester, in Randolph County, includes replacing most of the rail in both the main lines, as well as renewing the surfaces at 73 road crossings.

The company is also investing $38.2 million in the rail line that runs between Labadie, Mo., and Jefferson City, Mo., which is scheduled to be completed by the end of July.

Union Pacific plans to invest $3.6 billion in its 32,000-mile rail network this year.

From 2000 through 2011, Omaha, Neb.-based Union Pacific Corp. (NYSE: UNP) said it spent more than $31 billion on its network and operations. The company reported net income of $3.3 billion on operating revenue of $19.6 billion in 2011.
