High-speed rail nearing completion

Substitute transportation may be needed for passengers traveling to Chicago with Amtrak this summer.
The last phase of construction for the high-speed rail from St. Louis to Chicago began on June 16. Charter coaches will provide substitute transportation for the Lincoln Service and Texas Eagle services.
This will be the last year for large-scale construction and charter coach substitute transportation. Construction began north of Alton, Ill. in 2010.
A preview of the high-speed trains is scheduled for September 2012. The new high-speed trains will travel at 110 mph, as opposed to the current trains, which travel at 79 mph.
"The preview will be an official testing of trains in the area. It will be the first part of the corridor to experience higher speed trains," Josh Kauffman, Illinois Department of Transportation spokesman said.
The IDOT press release stated that the construction will consist of the installation of a new rail with concrete ties and stone ballasts, upgrades to bridges, and drainage, signal, and wayside equipments.
Kauffman said that after looking at other parts of the corridor such as the Springfield area and St. Louis area, further steps for the continuation of the high-speed rail project can be realized.
As the second summer with substitute transportation progresses, Amtrak will continue to manage their way through the construction, Amtrak representative Marc Magliari explained.
"The buses do operate on a different schedule, and we ask our customers for their patience," Magliari added.
He said that despite the decrease in ISU and IWU student and faculty travelers, the area has a lot of summer travelers.
"People who are unable to travel during the rest of the year make up the difference," Magliari said.
Both Magliari and Kauffman look forward to the completion of the project and the new high-speed rail. |
