You may be awestricken by the radiant talent of your favorite movie director. You may not know, however, the unsung aspiring and arduous striving before, almost as a rule, success and fame found him or her. Chris Chi, a talented and fervent young man in our St. Louis community, is following the footsteps of those who have left indelible imprint on the path of film-making.
Chris enjoyed watching movies in his childhood, and decided to pursue a movie-directing career in his teenage years after watching films made by those giants that have become classic. He won the first prize, with the work THE DECISIVE MOMENT, in the short movie contest in his sophomore year at Washington University, and as a result was commissioned by its Business School to film the promotional movie for the annual Olin Cup Scholarship. Subsequently in his senior year as an English major, his movie THE AIR SHOW was selected into the 2009 Connecticut Movie Festival.
After graduation he has lived in the Central West End in St. Louis and continued to devote most of his time to character study, script-writing and film-making, while freelanced directing and/or editing music videos as well as filming wedding videos to make a living.
This year, he entered the movie contest sponsored by the OCAC, Taiwan, through MACTV.COM.TW, with his latest work THE TRADE, which has been selected to be one of the top twenty, out of a hundred movies, for the final round of competition currently in the stage of popular vote, which contributes 15% to the score of each movie whereas the remaining 85% is judged by experts. The popular vote will end at 11pm on Aug. 30. Please cast your vote for him at http://video.mactv.com.tw; in fact you can vote once every day. The following is the interview with him.
1) Why are you interested in making movies, and when did it start?
Chris: It's fun to discover an idea, complete the story, visualize it, film it and edit it. I wanted to make movies after I saw the movie Requiem for a Dream by Darren Aronofsky.
2) What is the joy you get out of the process of making movies?
Chris: To create something that takes on its own life.
3) Why did you decide to take part in the Taiwanese movie contest with your work THE TRADE?
Chris: I have memories of my grandpa visiting the United States from Taiwan, and it seemed like a good opportunity to practice writing and directing.
4) How did you come up with the ideas of THE TRADE?
Chris: My parents told me about the competition during dinner, and there happened to be a tea set on the table, which started the first image of the story.
5) In general, can you describe your creative process?
Chris: It starts with an interesting image. I take the image and try and make a story out of it.
6) What is your next project after the contest?
Chris: The next project is a 35-minute short movie called THE SALE, about an aspiring actress in a small city who gets her reputation slandered by the boutique owner she works for... 7) What is your long-tern goal for movie-making?
Chris: I want to write and direct movies and have them take on their own lives in the general public. I want to be as original and influential as the greats, like Fellini, Kubrick, Kurosawa, or PT Anderson.
8) What is your challenge to be an ABC in this industry?
Chris: There's no challenge; people are respectful when it comes to business. |
