(Sep. 6, 2012) UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. - A federal agency has given final approval for a $25 million grant to develop a trolley system in the Delmar Loop area of University City and St. Louis.
The approval by the Federal Transit Administration was announced Wednesday. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the trolley should roll by mid-2014.
Loop developer Joe Edwards says the trolley will increase tourism, spur economic development and could create interest in other clean electric transit in the St. Louis area.
Some opponents say the trolley is a poor use of federal money, and question its financial viability.
The trolley will run on a 2.2-mile line from the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park to the University Library.
