(September 24, 2012) Mo. State Rep. Stacey Newman has won the special Democratic primary for the 87th District in St. Louis County, according to results posted on the Missouri Secretary of State website.
Newman beat fellow state representative, Susan Carlson, in the initial primary on Aug. 7 by the slimmest possible margin, one vote. Ballot irregularities, however, were uncovered that made a recount impossible and St. Louis County Circuit Judge Michael Jamison ultimately ordered a new election.
"Oh my gosh, it's a little overwhelming," Newman said. "You know, this has been an extension of a primary campaign, I had to run it not just once, but twice. So, our energy level was pretty intense, I've been campaigning since the day after session that we ended on May 18th.?
This time around Newman won by a wider margin, with 1,861 ballots cast in her favor totaling a little more than 51 percent of the vote. That's 94 votes more than Carlson; the final tally showed she received 1,766 votes.
"It's overwhelming, it's gratifying to know that it's over and I'm just so grateful to the voters of this district who I asked to not come for me one, but twice," Newman said.
With no Republican challenger in the November general election, Newman hopes to now be a force on the Democratic campaign trial and plans to help muster female support for the party.
