Over the past two decades St. Louis has seen the most dramatic increase in the amount of funding its research universities have attracted compared to other cities, according to a ranking put together by the Atlantic Magazine.

The magazine compared research dollars that went to specific cities in 1992 and last year. While the top 10 cities remain largely the same, the magazine reported that St. Louis' ranking jumped 205 spots from 1992, to rank at No. 15 in 2011.

"By comparison, the next highest change in ranking was Jacksonville's jump of 86, but they only cracked the 94th spot, making their jump relatively less impressive," according to the magazine.

The highest ranked cities in 2011 were the Boston metropolitan area ($1.3 billion) followed by the New York City ($1.13 billion) and Los Angeles ($1.05 billion) metropolitan areas. The magazine, however, failed to provide the total amount of research funding that St. Louis received in 2011, listing totals for only the top 10 recipients.
