Construction should start next month on a 130,000 square-foot plant in Grafton, Ill., off Route 3.
Grafton Mayor Tom Thompson told KMOX the plant will be constructed on an existing facility and should be able to export 15 million carp to China once it's fully operational.
A group of local investors operating as American Heartland Fish Products LLC, led by CEO Gray "Butch" Magee, along with Falcon Protein Products Inc. of Birmingham, Ala., and a Chinese investment group, are spending $5 million to $6 million on the facility. The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity awarded the city of Grafton a grant of more than $1.9 million to go toward building an Asian carp processing plant in July of last year.
