Arch riverfront redesign finds funding

A second big project in the planned $380 million restoration of the Gateway Arch grounds has received the go-ahead.
The initial project to put a "lid" over Interstate 70 near the Arch grounds will see construction begin this summer. Now the riverfront road that runs along the Mississippi River in front of the Arch, Leonor K. Sullivan Boulevard, will be raised about 2.5 feet and redesigned to include bicycle and pedestrian paths, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
An estimated $11 million in savings were found by engineers in working on the lid portion of the project, initially estimated to cost $47 million. Those savings pushed the second project, redevelopment of Leonor K. Sullivan boulevard, forward.
Voters in St. Louis city and county will vote in April on a sales tax increase to help fund the Arch grounds project, adding less than 2 cents on a $10 purchase.
Great Rivers Greenway, a publicly funded regional trails organization, is contributing $10 million to the project, and an additional $4 million is coming from private donations for the Arch redevelopment. About $8 million will come from federal funds. Construction is scheduled to start in March 2014. |
