Louis, March, 25, 2013 - Betsy Cohen has been named the first project director of the regional Immigration & Innovation Initiative, a collaboration led by St. Louis County Economic Council, St. Louis Development Corporation and St. Louis Regional Chamber. Cohen will be based at the Economic Council within the World Trade Center St. Louis.
"We have to control our own destiny. In order to do that we have to make a sustained effort to be intentionally inclusive and welcoming," said St. Louis County Executive Charlie A Dooley. "We need someone working on this global initiative every single day. Needless to say, we are very excited for Betsy to begin her work."
In 2012, the William T. Kemper Foundation funded the report, "The Economic Impact of Immigration on St. Louis," by Jack Strauss PhD, director of the Simon Center for Regional Forecasting at Saint Louis University. Shortly after the report𠏋 June 2012 unveiling, a 20-member St. Louis Regional Immigration & Innovation Steering Committee was formed, representing a diverse mix of regional business, civic, economic development, and academic leaders. The committee is analyzing the effects of immigration on the St. Louis region and building support for local recommendations to attract, support and ultimately retain new citizens to spur growth and secure the economic future of St. Louis.
"Betsy is great at bringing people together to work toward a common goal, which makes her an outstanding choice to move the agenda of St. Louis' Immigration & Innovation Initiative forward," said Anna Crosslin, president of the International Institute and Immigration & Innovation Steering Committee member. "I am personally and professionally delighted she is joining our team."
Cohen previously served as vice president at Nestle Purina and has worked with many international associates. At Purina, Cohen led a regional coalition that involved public and private organizations as well as city and county governmental organizations. She is involved in many civic groups such as: United Way, St. Louis Crisis Nursery, Saint Louis University Cook School of Business, and I-Cares Sustainability Council at Washington University in St. Louis. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wellesley College and Master of Business Administration from the Harvard Business School. |
