Despite mergers and corporate moves, St. Louis still has nine companies big enough to make the Fortune 500.
Jones Financial, parent of brokerage firm Edward Jones, made the list for the first time. That kept St. Louis' representation at nine, the same number as last year, even after Charter Communications moved its headquarters to Connecticut.
The annual list ranks the largest U.S. companies by revenue. This year, it features the highest ranking for a St. Louis company in two decades. Express Scripts Holding moved up to No. 24 on the list, from 60th last year, after acquiring rival Medco Health Services.
McDonnell Douglas ranked as high as No. 21 on the list (in 1992) before it was acquired by Boeing in 1997. Until the mid-1990s, the Fortune 500 featured only manufacturing companies.
Here are the St. Louis companies in the 2013 Fortune 500, with last year's ranking in parentheses:
24. Express Scripts Holding (60) 123. Emerson (120)
206. Monsanto (224)
