President Obama visited Missouri and Illinois Wednesday to speak about jobs, the economy and education.
The President spoke at Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., and later at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. Knox College was the site of a speech he gave eight years ago in 2005 outlining his economic philosophy.
On Politics and Policy
If you were hoping for a speech unveiling sweeping new economic plans...well you were probably disappointed. As Wonkblog writes, "that was a lot of hype for very little policy. "Marketplace summarized his economic vision with two words: Middle out. Obama criticized a "faction of Republicans" obstructing progress, saying the only thing they stand for is attacking his policies. And a new poll says Americans might agree. 22 percent said they believe the GOP is interested in unifying the country, while 45 percent said the same about Obama. Under Pressure
As the Associated Press reports, Obama's speeches are to increase public pressure on Congress as lawmakers gear for a month-long recess in August. Possible showdowns are taxes and spending (as always), as well as a fix to the doubled student loan rate.
Sold Out
Tickets went on sale for Obama's speech on Monday and were gone within an hour. A line stretched two blocks to get them. Students filled stage behind the president during his Missouri speech. 17-year-old Armaja LaRue-Hill said she was hoping for a fist bump from the Commander in Chief.
Critiques from the Left and Right
That doesn't mean everyone is happy about his visit. The Sierra Club, an environmental organization, plans on protesting the event in Missouri to draw attention to the Keystone Pipeline expansion. He's really not making anyone happy on the Keystone Pipeline. Although environmental organizations would argue he's not doing enough to stop the pipeline, many on the right are saying he's holding up the pipeline at the detriment to the economy. Boehner suggested approving the pipeline from Canada to the U.S. Gulf Coast would do more to create jobs than delivering speeches would.
Possible Cameos
Gov. Jay Nixon was in attendance at Obama's speech in Missouri, to the derision of many on the right. Keep in mind that the president was trounced in the state in November, losing by more than 9 points.
Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill received a shout-out from Obama, who referred to her as the Senator from "Missour-uh."
