St. Louis ranks third in home affordability

Housing prices in metro St. Louis are the third most affordable in the nation, according to a new analysis by

The typical family here has 18 percent more income than it needs to buy the typical house, the loan-shopping website says. Only Atlanta and Minneapolis were more affordable for home buyers.
The website compared median income for metro areas with median housing prices. Insurance, taxes and mortgage rates figured in the calculation, which assumes a 20 percent down payment. The website calculated the results for the nation's 25 largest metropolitan areas.
"St. Louis' residents are helped by the second-lowest home prices in the top 25 markets and a median household income just slightly above average," the analysis said.
Home prices in St. Louis are also rising more slowly than in the nation as a whole, which helps affordability.
San Francisco was the least affordable area, with the median family having just 48 percent of the income needed for the median house. San Diego and New York were second and third on the least-affordable list.
