OCA Concerned About Impact of Typhoon Haiyan

WASHINGTON, D.C. - OCA - Asian Pacific American Advocates, a national membership driven organization dedicated to advancing the political, social, and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans (APA), is concerned about the catastrophic impact of Typhoon Haiyan.
Haiyan made landfall in the Philippines on Monday November 4th, and in less than 48 hours, claimed the lives of 10,000 individuals. When factoring in the number injured and missing, the mortality figures are expected to steadily climb. CNN reports that, according to authorities, at least 9.7 million people in 41 provinces were affected by the typhoon.
Since its destruction in the Philippines, Haiyan has been downgraded to a tropical storm and has moved into Vietnam and Southern China. According to the US Census, Filipinos constitute over 3.2 of the 17 million Asian and Pacific Americans in the United States. Filipino Americans were among the Asian Pacific American ethnic groups that participated in the Pacific theatre during War World II.
"The impact of this natural disaster has been devastating. We are extremely concerned about how Haiyan is affecting Filipino Americans, especially given their family ties in the Philippines," remarked President Sharon M. Wong, "our thoughts are with the individuals devastated by this tragic event."
The Filipino and the broader American communities immediately began initiating the relief efforts, which include, but are not limited to, the collection of monetary and in-kind donation of desperately needed supplies. In the immediate past week, U.S. Marines, among other assets, have been deployed to support recovery efforts.
