CHILDREN'S HOUSE CLASS CELEBRATES CHINESE NEW YEAR AT BO LINGS FINE CHINESE CUISINE
|

Can a gourmet Chinese
restaurant keep nineteen 3- to 6-year-old Kansas City children entertained while educating
them about Chinese New Year?
No problem! Owners Richard and Teresa Ng of Bo Lings Fine Chinese Cuisine in Kansas City,
Missouri love kids, and welcome class tours of their kitchen. The children of Ms.
Elizabeth Hobbs' Border Star Montessori Children's House class got to see the restaurant's
dim sum chefs rolling out pancakes, peeked into a rice steamer, watched prep workers chop
vegetables at lightning speed. But what did they like best? |

"The dead ducks!"
student Max Von Schlemmer says, and we're sure his classmates would agree with him!
Although that comment probably sends a small shudder down the backs of Max's vegetarian
parents, Max was delighted to see a chef working on a whole table full of freshly plucked
whole ducks. Thankfully, there was no chopping going on at that table just then --- but
the kids did get a big kick out of watching the chef blow air into one of the ducks,
making him look very fat and funny. "The air compressor separates the duck's skin
from the meat," Richard Ng explains.
The children then chowed down on lunch specials (sweet and sour chicken, Crab Rangoon and
fried rice), doing their best to get some bites with chopsticks. The fortune cookies were
a little easier to handle, and each child received a bag of fortune cookies, almond
cookies, a Chinese New Year pin, Chinese paper fans, a red bead bracelet and other Chinese
New year goodies to take home. |

| "We have been studying
Chinese New Year in class, making dragon masks and studying the Chinese New Year
customs," volunteer and mom Anne Winter says. "They really had a great time, and
my son is always asking when we can go back to Bo Lings and eat with sticks!" |
