Author Anchee Min to Visit St. Louis County Library Headquarters

Author Anchee Min will visit St. Louis County Library Headquarters, 1640 S. Lindbergh in Ladue, on Wednesday, April 17, at 3:00 p.m. to discuss her latest novel "Wild Ginger," with the public. Min was born in Shanghai in 1957 and sent to a labor collective at 17 where a talent scout of Madame Mao's Shanghai Film Studio recruited her to play the protagonists in Madame Mao's propaganda films. Min became knowledgeable of Madame Mao and her ways during this time. Min escaped to the United States in 1984 not speaking any English. Her memoir "Red Azalea," was named a New York Times Notable Book of 1994 and a film adaptation is in the works. Since, Min has written three novels, "Katherine" (1997),  "Becoming Madame Mao" (2000), and most recently "Wild Ginger" (2002).

"Wild Ginger," Min's latest novel is a true-to-life story about two girls growing up in Shanghai during the Cultural Revolution, which swept China in the mid-60s near the end of Mao's reign.  Critics say it is Anchee Min's most powerful work to date.
