LANDMARK THEATRES ACQUIRES THE HI-POINTE, THE OLDEST MOVIE THEATRE IN ST. LOUIS Los Angeles, CA April 12, 2002 -Landmark Theatres announced today it has acquired the Hi-Pointe Theatre, St. Louis' oldest continuously operating cinema. In addition to the Hi-Pointe, Landmark owns two more theatres in the St. Louis area - the six-screen Plaza Frontenac Cinema and the three-screen Tivoli Theatre. The Hi-Point is a single-screen theatre with 480 seats and has been under the ownership of George and Georgia James since 1979. "Landmark has enjoyed a long-standing relationship with George and Georgia, two of the most respected specialized exhibitors in the independent film community. It is now our privilege to continue their tradition of showcasing the finest in American independent, foreign language and restored classic films in a beloved local movie palace," said Paul Richardson, Landmark's president and CEO. Built in 1922, the Hi-Pointe is located in St. Louis on the corner of McCausland and Skinker. Unlike many of the other single-screen cinemas in the area that were originally built as vaudeville theatres, the Hi-Pointe was always intended to show film. Over the past 80 years, the theatre has been through many renovations. The classic turquoise seats, a favorite of the theatre's patrons, were added in 1963. Over the past two years, Dolby Digital Sound, new carpeting and a new speaker system were installed. Landmark Theatres recently opened several noteworthy art house cinemas including the revitalized turn-of-the-century Sunshine Cinema in Manhattan and the Regent Theatre in Westwood Village, Los Angeles. Landmark will open the new 8-plex Bethesda Row Cinema in Bethesda, Maryland on May 3. The Hi-Pointe brings the total number of Landmark theatres to 55, representing 179 screens in 13 states across the U.S. furthering the company's mission to provide audiences with ongoing access to independent art cinema. Headquartered in Los Angeles, California, Landmark was founded in 1974 with the 1930s Art Deco Nuart Theatre located in West Los Angeles. Currently on screen at the Hi-Pointe Theatre is director Mira Nair's Monsoon Wedding. For a complete list of show times, call the Hi-Pointe Theatre at 314-781-0800 or visit www.landmarktheatres.com.
