He could lead if he could get the lead out.

The word 'lead' has two meanings and two sounds.

1 - say lid.  It means to direct or set an example.

2 - say led.  The clause 'get the lead out' refers to
'having too much of the heavy metal, lead, in one's
butt' or laziness.

Another way to say this is:

He could show the way if he weren't so lazy.
