There seems to be something in the news about gangs every day, but what exactly is a gang? A gang, as defined for this article, is a group of people, often young, who join together and take part in violent and criminal activities. A gang often has its own name, "turf" and code of dress or behavior. The growth of gangs has spread to smaller communities and is becoming more violent and deadly.
Gangs grow from common bonds. Although not all people with similar backgrounds join a gang. Some of the common backgrounds include, neighborhoods and ethnic backgrounds. Gang members can be male or female, children teens or adults, and rich or poor. There are different levels of membership such as hardcore members, fringe members and wannabes.
Why do young people join gangs? Some fell pressure, want protection, are friends with gang members, want excitement or money, a need to belong and feel connected, or feel insecure. The warning signs of gang involvement include: a change in friends, poor grades, skipping school, staying out late, suddenly having more money, drug use, and using gang signs or wearing gang clothes. Gangs have their own style and language, such as: clothing, jewelry, hand signs, slang, tattoos, and weapons.
A gang can threaten the safety and well being of everyone. Graffiti for example is used to challenge rivals and promote the strength of a gang. Vandalism and dealing drugs can lead to destruction of property, more crime and increase in violence. Theft, assaults, and drive-by shootings disrupt and destroy lives of innocent people and sometimes the entire community.
What can be done? Young people need positive self-esteem, encourage your friends and complement their efforts and achievements. Be a good role model and discuss the dangers of gangs. Get advice and help from friends, parents, teachers, community help agencies such as Youth In Need, or an adult that you trust. Be aware of and learn how to safely prevent gang activity. Volunteer or get involved with young groups that make positive differences in the community. You can become a leader in your life and that of your friends and community.
