A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.

The word 'bass' is used with two different meanings
and two different sounds.

1 - say bas, with your mouth open wide.  It is a
species of river and lake fish, very popular with
fishermen. 

2 - say beis.  A bass drum has a deep, booming sound.

Another way to say this is:

A picture of a fish was painted on the skin of the
drum.  The fish was a bass.  It was a bass drum.
