When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.

The word 'dove' is used with two different meanings
and two different sounds.

1 - say deuv. The 'v', similar to a 'b', sound is made
while moving the lower lip outward across the upper
teeth.  It means a bird similar to a pigeon, often
white in color.

2- say douv.  It means dive, as into water, but at a
previous time.

Another way to say this is:

At the sound of the gun, the dove flew into the
shrubs.
