October Events at the St. Louis Science Center

October 10 - Lights On After School is a national project of The Afterschool Alliance.  This resource fair showcases local youth and the benefits they receive from after school programs.  Over 2,000 sites across the U.S. will sponsor a Lights On Afterschool! program this year.  4-8 pm; free.  For information, 314/289-4400 toll free 800/456-7572. 

October 11- Public Telescope Viewing See stars, planets, constellations and deep-sky objects on the archery range just west of the Science Center. Free telescope viewing begins at dusk. Co-sponsored by the St. Louis Astronomical Society. May be cancelled in inclement weather.  Call the Night Sky Update, 314/289-4453. 

October 11 - Sci-Fi Film Fest  Bring a blanket or lawn chair and the whole family to watch the great science fiction classic film shown on the outside of the James S. McDonnell Planetarium in Forest Park. Begins at 7:30 pm with the cartoon Duck Dodgers in the 24 ½ Century followed by the main feature The Invisible Man. Free admission; concessions available. Oct. 18-19- Camp-Ins At this after-hours adventure, explore the galleries and delight in special hands-on activities, for school-aged children up to grade 6 and their parents, adult leaders/sponsors. Enjoy an evening snack and morning breakfast, see an OMNIMAX® film, play in the Discovery Room and enjoy a Science Theatre Presentation. Plus, receive a souvenir patch and certificate; Co-ed / Family Camp In.  5 pm, Friday-10 am, Saturday. Cost: $30 (Science Center members, $24-27); pre-registration required. October 18-19  "Beary Scary" Halloween.  These special Halloween parties at the Science Center feature a "bear" theme to compliment the OMNIMAXâ film, Bears.  Games include: the "Ice Flow", "Lost in the Woods" (maze), "Buzzing Bees" (ball toss), and "Salmon Run" (fishing hole). You can also make bear claw necklaces and bear masks, enjoy refreshments and visit the "Grizzly Bears Pumpkin Patch."  Tickets are $12 ($10 for Science Center members). ONGOING
Through February 7, 2003 - The St. Louis Science Center, in cooperation with the Eastern Missouri Society of Paleontology, will be uncovering a triceratops fossil in a special exhibit at the Science Center from Sept. 23, 2002-Feb. 7, 2003.  Visitors can see the fossil in a glassed exhibit area where paleontologists will be working to uncover the fossil. Through-January 2, 2003 - Bears Travel to exotic locations and enjoy some of the most spectacular footage 
of bears ever captured. In this OMNIMAXÒ film, see polar bears in Alaska, wild grizzlies in Northern Canada, the American black bear in Wyoming, Asian black bears in India, and the enormous brown bear in Russia, plus learn about the giant pandas of China. Through March 2003- "Every Body's Chemistry" Check out some dynamic chemical reactions that show us how living things work. This free, 10-minute Amazing Science demonstration is presented daily, check at the Visitor Information Center for show times; street level demonstration area. 

Through September 2003 - "Now Hear This!" Roaring sewer pipes, screaming aluminum rods and singing crystal goblets set the stage for this science of sound demo. Hear unusual sounds while investigating the basic properties of sound waves. This free, 10-minute Amazing Science demonstration is presented daily, check at the Visitor Information Center for show times; street level demonstration area.
