HEALTH NOTE Stephen D. Ball, Ph.D., Nutritional Sciences, University of Missouri-Columbia. Why don't I lose weight on my diet? Why can't I keep the weight off? A sad reality is that almost all diets are unsuccessful. Approximately 50% of people who lose a significant amount gain back the weight within the first two years. Only five to ten percent of dieters keep off the weight permanently. Only 5-10%! People often gain the weight back because they make extreme lifestyle changes that cannot be continued throughout their lifetime. In addition, many people select unhealthy and unrealistic body weights. We know that many people will never look like the magazine supermodels, regardless of what they eat or how much they work out simply because of their individual genetic makeup. Be realistic with yourself when you are managing your weight. To achieve and maintain a healthy weight, a person must make certain behavior changes. First, you must select a balanced, nutrient dense diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. You must eat modest portions. And finally, you must increase your activity level. You must remember that as you make changes to your routine, do so gradually. Choose foods you will have access to and like to prepare. Also choose activities you enjoy find someone to do them with. The most successful people have someone to share their successes with.
