"And the Winner is........"

Last summer, Ellie Bednarek (born in Wuhan, China on 5/17/95), and active FCC member, spent many evenings rehearsing for "The Wizard of Ozz", which was produced by "Spotlight Productions", Rockwood School District's theater program. 

Ellie portrayed "Toto", Dorothy's very inquisitive dog! The show was a hit and Ellie had a great time performing (along with her FCC friend, Emily Spina who danced and sang as a Munchkin). Her enthusiasm paid off because she made the audience laugh, as the director planned, on many occasions.

Fast forward to April, 2003 and "try-outs" for this year's summer show. As we waited for Ellie's try-out, the director of the "Spotlight" program approached us and congratulated Ellie on her "nomination". He told us that Ellie had been nominated for "Best Performance by a Juvenile Actor in a Musical" for her performance! The "Arts for Life Council of St. Louis" was holding its yearly awards presentation, and Ellie was invited!! 

June 8th saw Mom, Dad, Grandma, and Ellie all dressed up (a "black tie" event!) and wide-eyed with excitement as we sat in the audience and enjoyed the show (much like the "Tony Awards" in NYC!). Six children had been nominated for the award, and all were invited on stage and introduced to the audience. Ellie insisted on wearing her new blue silk dress from China and she sparkled like a sapphire! Then the big moment came. The Master of Ceremonies read off each child's name, then said those words:

 "And the Winner is .......Ellie Bednarek!"

Mom, Dad, and Grandma went crazy!! She was presented with a glistening crystal award! Ellie made one of those "oh my gosh!" acceptance speeches and thanked her parents, her dog, Tara (for teaching her how to act the part) and her directors. It was one of those incredible moments that make parents cry and beam with pride! The incredible wonder of this beautiful child burst like fireworks in my heart. Apparently God has plans for Ellie that go way beyond anything I had ever envisioned! 

As to this year's play...... Ellie wasn't cast for a role. Actually, she said that was just fine with her.....she wants to spend the summer riding her bike, playing with friends, and swimming. She loves being a kid....... and that makes her a winner!
