The St. Louis Chinese American News (SCANews) The first Chinese immigrant came to St. Louis in 1857. Since then, Chinese and Asian immigrants (include a lot of students) came to this beautiful mid-west city gradually. In Mid 1900, there are about 10,000 Chinese at the metropolitan St. Louis area. A lot of Chinese immigrants still get used to read Chinese newspaper to know the St. Louis news, United States news, world news and, especially, home town news (China and Taiwan) in Chinese. Also, this big Chinese community needs a communication tool and bridge to the American community. Seeing the needs of a Chinese newspaper, in September 1990, a Chinese couple, George and Sandy Tsai who were entrepreneurs and had always been interested in the community affairs, decided to start this first Chinese language newspaper, the St. Louis Chinese American News (SCANews), in St. Louis. To better serves the community, the St. Louis Chinese American News is published weekly, FREE, and distributed to more than 50 distribution points in the metro St. Louis area. SCANews's mission statement declares that it would "promote Chinese culture, bridge between the Chinese community and the larger society, and voice the community need and development." The newspaper operated as an independent local newspaper to maintain its freedom and community orientation. The front page always features the Chinese community news and the other pages of the 28-32 pages newspaper are divided into sections of news focus, community news, commerce news, special column, interviews of individuals, literary prose, and critics of movies made in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong. Currently, we have more than 50,000 Asian Americans in the St. Louis community. The volume of the newspaper has increased from 1,000 copies of the initial years to 6,000 of the present. Every Thursday, the newspapers are delivered to about fifty distributing points of Chinese grocery stores, Chinese restaurants, Chinese churches, and Chinese language schools. The staff members also grew from two to eight in 2003, including Director (May Yueh), Chief Editor (Francis Yueh), Editor (Maria Zhang), Advertising Manager (Tracy Wong), advertising designer, reporters, columnists, and deliver. In 1997, St. Louis Chinese American News launched her website at http://www.scanews.com. It is the first and only St. Louis local Chinese newspaper in the web which bring St. Louis Chinese American community to world's attention. In 1998, St. Louis Chinese American News signed a contract with Sinanet.com, the largest web-site in Chinese in North America, and the newspaper has reached out to Chinese readers throughout the world. In 1999, St. Louis Chinese American News began the partnership with Hunchnet.com, which brings more than 10 largest US Cities' local Chinese newspapers together into a web hub. These web events and strategy partnerships indicate a significant transition. The St. Louis Chinese American News has transformed from a traditional local newspaper to a World Wide Web newspaper. In 2000, SCANews started to publish a yearly St. Louis Chinese American Yellow Pages. This 256 pages publication serves the community in every fields, include Chinese schools, Chinese churches, Buddha temples, business listing, immigration law...etc. The circulation is 10,000 copies per year. Almost every Chinese family has one copy of SCANews Yellow Pages at home. Growing with the relationship between China and United States and implement the world village idea, in 2001, SCANews establish the Chinese Culture and Education Foundation (website http://www.CCEFoundation.org). The mission of the Chinese Culture and Education Foundation (CCEF) is to promote understanding and cooperation between the Chinese and English-speaking communities in the St. Louis region. The CCEF Board of Directors includes distinguished members of both communities who are dedicated to increasing interest in and understanding of Chinese and Chinese-American culture. American society is an amalgam of persons coming from many different countries and cultural backgrounds, including China. Through the merging of cultures, Chinese culture has become a part of American culture. The CCEF supports publications, lectures, workshops, and other programs that present to all Americans Chinese culture and its contribution to the American experience. In November 2001, St. Louis Chinese American News breaks the language barrier and started to publish a special English section - "St. Louis Chinese American" inside the regular weekly Chinese newspaper. This English section is appreciated by all non-Chinese readers, includes second generation Chinese Americans, Asian Americans and mainstream American community.
