Crown Center Dedicates New Computer Resource

	The Crown Computer Center will hold a dedication and recognition 
celebration on April 2, 11:00 a.m. Thanks to a start up grant from
the Kahn Foundation of Temple Israel, residents of  The Gladys and
Henry Crown Center for Senior Living in University City are now
able to "surf the net" and connect with friends and relatives
via e-mail.  Starting with computer games to help build confidence,
over 30 participants are being guided by 15 volunteers, as they take
their first steps into cyberspace. Having learned some very basic
computer skills, they are now ready to venture into the world of the
vastly expanded information highway. 

	To her immense delight, one senior was recently able to see a 
sonogram of her unborn grandson over the internet. Two other
residents can now regularly read foreign newspapers of their choice,
Polish and Chinese. One volunteer, only a step ahead of the seniors 
she is "tutoring," learns something new herself each time she comes
to coach them. Washington University's Hillel Center is organizing
a core of student volunteer "e-mail pen pals" for the Crown Center novices. 
A pen pal "meet-in-person" party is planned for this spring.

	The Crown Computer Center has also been designated by HUD as a 
Neighborhood Network site.  Serving over 250 senior adults, as well as
many other seniors in the community, Crown Center is committed 
to providing affordable, quality senior living in a caring and friendly atmosphere, honoring the Jewish tradition. According to Nikki Goldstein, Executive Director, "by making our new computer center possible, the generosity of the Kahn Foundation has added a whole new dimension to life at Crown Center and transported a significant group of energized seniors into the 21st century."
