WHAT'S HAPPENIN' in U.City - November 2003 By Larry Lieberman, Councilmember 1st Ward, U City Loop News: The new state law permitting 9:00am liquor sales (previously 11:00am) has been endorsed by both the Loop Special Business District Board of Directors and the Olive Business Assn; a U.City ordinance will follow. Both business groups have also endorsed U.City prohibiting concealed weapons from city buildings. There will be no "Holiday Walk" this year; instead, the Loop merchants will set up a 2-week period for holiday celebrations, possibly including caroling events by schools and churches. Discounts and roses for the ladies will be available at selected Loop restaurants on Valentine's Day (Feb. 14). The "East Loop" area east of Skinker is developing a new streetscape and new businesses, as an extension of our own U.City Loop. Coming soon are: Pin-Up Bowl, Chinese Noodle Café, Mirasol Latino restaurant, and Spot 9 women's shoe store. U.City East is sponsoring free health tests at the Library from 9-11am on Sat., Nov. 22nd. Call 721-6133 for info. The St. Louis Chinese American News, based in U.City, received the 2003 Missouri Media Award. The U.City Library received two technology grants from the Missouri State Library for a new wireless computer lab and software to help teach English to non-native speakers. Incidentally, check out the free videos at the Library, which can be taken out for a whole week, with a 25cent/day fine if you're late. The U.City Lions Club is accepting old eyeglasses for recycling at Frank & Helen's Restaurant on Olive. Nancy E. MacCartney is our new Director of Parks, Recreation and Forestry, effective Nov. 10th. She has an impressive professional background, having served in Reno, Grand Rapids, and Hallandale, Fla. The City Council passed ordinances that prohibits concealed weapons in any city building, and will be posting suitable signs at all entrances. Also, signs will be available to any U.City business that requests them. The City is moving forward to purchase the Sutter-Meyer House at 6826 Chamberlain, a historic landmark. No decision yet on its utilization after it is repaired. We passed a bill extending our ban on discrimination in housing, employment, etc. to include sexual orientation. We will be placing an increase in the annual sewer lateral repair fee on the Feb. 3, 2004 ballot. More info later.
